Mesh is often presented as the universal solution to poor Wi-Fi. It can be extremely useful, especially where new cables cannot be installed, but a wired access point normally begins with a stronger and more predictable connection.

What wired access points do differently

A wired access point uses network cabling for its connection back to the router or network switch. Its wireless capacity is therefore available to the nearby devices rather than also being used to relay data through another wireless unit.

Where mesh earns its place

In an existing building, the perfect cable route may be inaccessible, too disruptive or disproportionate to the problem. A carefully positioned mesh link can reach an area that would otherwise remain poorly served. The important word is carefully: every wireless hop needs a strong connection to the next one.

Many properties benefit from wired access points in the main house, an outdoor access point for the garden and a limited mesh extension in one difficult area. The right answer is not a brand or a fashionable term; it is the arrangement that fits the building and expected use.

Survey before buying more boxes

Adding repeaters without understanding the existing coverage can create competing signals, awkward roaming and more equipment without solving the original problem. A survey identifies weak areas, interference, available cable routes and the best location for each device.
